Jon Houston Carries PL to a Strong 8-6 Win over Faribault

Jon Houston Carries PL to a Strong 8-6 Win over Faribault

Jon Houston had arguably the best game of his career on Tuesday night in an 8-6 win over Faribault at Memorial Park.

Houston finished 3 for 3 at the plate with a grand slam, the first home run of his career. He finished a triple shy of a cycle. Jon also pitched the 7th inning and recorded the save for Prior Lake. What an impressive performance!

Joe Gutoske got the start on the mound for PL and did a very solid job for the first four innings to keep the team in the game.

The pivotal inning of the game was the 6th. With the game tied 6-6, Matt Probst led off with a walk and Houston singled into left field. Two batters later came the big hit of the night when Austin Truso lined a double into left center to give PL the 8-6 lead that ended up as the final score.

Kyle Schmidt got the win in relief for Prior Lake, working two innings with 3 strikeouts.

PL is back in action tonight against South St. Paul at McGuire Field at 6pm.

PL Gets Comeback Win 5-3 over Apple Valley

PL Gets Comeback Win 5-3 over Apple Valley

It was a very hard fought, come from behind 5-3 victory for Prior Lake Legion over Apple Valley on Thursday night at Memorial Park.

To this point in the season, it seems like come from behind wins are what the PL Legion team does best.

PL was down 3-0 for much of the game until a five run outburst in the 5th inning. Garrett Gueltzow got the inning started with a single to left. Two batters later, Kyle Manderfeld singled to right to make it first and third. Zac Repinski followed with a double to right center to drive in Gueltzow and move Manderfeld to third. Jon Houston then hit a huge double of his own to right center to drive in Manderfeld and Repinski to tie the game at 3 apiece. Houston then scored following a passed ball and a wild pitch to give Prior Lake a 4-3 lead. After Kyle Schmidt was hit by a pitch and Tyler Edwards walked, Tommy Keating singled to left to drive in Schmidt and give PL their 5-3 lead that it would not relinquish.

Austin Truso got the start on the mound. He did not have his best stuff but did enough to keep the team in the game.

Tony Loehr got the win in relief, going 2 2/3 innings and only giving up 1 hit and 1 strikeout.

Jon Houston made the play of the game in the 6th when he dove to his left to stop a ground ball and threw the runner out from his backside. The play would have been very worthy of making it on SportCenter's "Top 10 Plays."

Prior Lake is back in action tonight at Memorial against Inver Grove Heights at 7:30pm.

A Strong Outing from Gabbard Leads PL past Lakeville South

A Strong Outing from Gabbard Leads PL past Lakeville South

Andrew Gabbard was about as efficient as a starting pitcher could be in a 4-0 win over Lakeville South on Wednesday night.

Gabbard threw a complete game for Prior Lake, finishing with 5 strikeouts while only allowing 4 hits and walking none. He also threw under 80 pitches which is very good for a 7 inning outing.

Prior Lake had some issues at the plate on Wednesday but was able to produce enough to win the game. The scoring started right away in the 1st inning when Zac Repinski lined a triple to right center followed by a sacrifice fly by Jon Houston to make it 1-0. The struggles then set in for PL as they never really got anything going until the top of the 7th. After Kyle Manderfeld reached base on an throwing error, Repinski sent a rocket to right center for a double to drive in Manderfeld and make it 2-0 PL. Then came possibly the most important at bat of the game when Jon Houston dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line. The third baseman then proceeded to throw the ball over the first baseman's head, allowing Repinski to score and Houston to advance to second base. Houston then scored when Tyler Edwards lined a double into right center to get the final score of 4-0.

Next Prior Lake game is tonight at Memorial against Apple Valley at 7:30pm.

PL Wins High Scoring Affair With East Ridge to Advance to Snake Pit Semis

PL Wins High Scoring Affair With East Ridge to Advance to Snake Pit Semis

The entire game was a offensive battle but Prior Lake defeated East Ridge 16-9 on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the Snake Pit tournament.

Tyler Edwards and Matt Probst led the way at the plate. Edwards was on fire as he finished 4 for 5 with 3 RBI and a big 2-run home run that got things going in the bottom of the first. Probst finished 3 for 4 with a double and 4 RBI.

The most important inning for PL was the 6th. After blowing a lead in the previous inning, Prior Lake entered the frame down 9-8. The inning was a hit parade as PL as they put together 7 hits and 3 walks en route to an 8 run inning to set up the 16-9 win.

Jon Houston got the win in relief, lasting 2 1/3 innings. Jon followed up a solid outing from Tony Loehr who lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up 2 earned runs.

PL Legion lost to Chaska 9-7 following the East Ridge game but the result was irrelevant as PL had already advanced to Sunday.

Prior Lake's next game will be on Sunday at 12pm at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville against Eagan in the semifinals of the Snake Pit tournament. If PL wins, they will take on the winner of the other semifinal in the Snake Pit Championship Game at 4:30pm, also at Alimagnet Park.

PL Comes From Behind to Walk Off Wayzata in Snake Pit Opener

PL Comes From Behind to Walk Off Wayzata in Snake Pit Opener

It was another struggle at the plate for Prior Lake Legion on Friday against Wayzata but the bats came alive when it counted.

Facing a 2-0 deficit entering the bottom of the 7th inning, PL left it all on the field. With one out in the inning, Kyle Schmidt was able to stay in the box and get hit by a pitch to get on base to start the rally. Tyler Edwards then followed that up by roping a single into left. Tommy Keating then was able to work a walk, ending the outing for the Wayzata starter. Then the true magic happened, after getting down in the count, Jon Houston chopped a ball out towards short that could have been a game ending double play. However, the ball hopped over the shortstop's head and into centerfield, allowing Schmidt and Edwards to score to tie the game at 2. Joe Gutoske then followed with a great at bat to work a walk and load the bases yet again. Tony Loehr stepped into the box with a chance to be the hero and he came through with a base hit to right field to drive in Keating and get the walk off win 3-2.

PL had only managed one hit through 6 innings, a single by Keating.

While the last inning was very exciting, Austin Truso was the reason that Prior Lake had a chance to win. Truso had a great outing on the mound throwing a complete game with 9 strikeouts against a very good hitting team from Wayzata. His effort was a big key in the victory.

Prior Lake will play again today at Memorial against East Ridge at 4:30pm and against Chaska at 7pm as the Snake Pit Tournament continues. The game schedule for tomorrow will be determined by the result of today's games.

Gabbard Leads PL Past Rosemount

Gabbard Leads PL Past Rosemount

It was not a great night at the plate for Prior Lake Legion but when there is a pitcher like Andrew Gabbard on the mound, not much is needed to win.

Gabbard got the win on Wednesday night over Rosemount, lasting 5 and 2/3 innings and striking out 6 and only giving up 4 hits. The night could have been even more special for him as Andrew took a no hitter into the fifth inning before being squeezed by the umpire, causing a couple of hits. All in all, great outing yet again for Gabbard.

At the plate, PL needed to manufacture runs and did so just enough for the victory. The scoring started right away in the 1st inning when Zac Repinski singled and stole second. On the very next pitch, Tyler Edwards lined a double to right center to give Prior Lake a 1-0 lead after one inning. There was no more scoring until the fifth. Repinski started off it with a one out bloop infield single. Zac then proceeded to move to second on another stolen base. A walk to Tommy Keating and a fly out by Tyler Edwards made it first and second with two outs. After a wild pitch moved to Repinski to third base, Austin Truso was able to hit a ball deep enough in the hole at shortstop and beat it out to drive in a run and make it 2-0. Matt Probst then singled off the pitcher to load the bases and Taylor Wildgen beat out an infield single to drive in another run and make it 3-0 PL after the top of the 5th.

Rosemount was able to get a run in the bottom of the 6th when Gabbard ran into trouble. However, Jon Houston came into a bases loaded situation and bailed Gabbard out with a huge strikeout. Houston stayed in for the 7th and recorded the save and give PL a 3-1 win.

The next game for Prior Lake Legion will be tonight against Wayzata at Memorial at 7pm as part of the Snake Pit Tournament.

Truso's Dominance leads PL to 6-0 win over Shakopee

Truso's Dominance leads PL to 6-0 win over Shakopee

Pitching and defense wins games. It's an old adage that has been used by coaches since the great game of baseball was created sure came into play on Thursday night (6/12) at Schlepper Field in Shakopee.

Austin Truso led the way for Prior Lake with his great pitching performance on the mound. Austin went 6 innings allowing merely 3 hits while striking out 5. All of his pitches seemed to have a lot of movement and the Shakopee hitters never seemed to figure him out.

As for the offense, PL got things going early. Jonny Houston worked a walk to start things off as the Shakopee starter struggled to throw strikes to begin his outing. Matt Probst then drove in Houston a few pitches later with a double over the center fielder's head. Following a couple of flyouts, Tommy Keating was able to pick up his teammates and drive in Probst making it 2-0 after one inning.

Prior Lake added another run in the fourth inning to make it 3-0 behind a single from Joe Gutoske followed by 3 walks as Shakopee's pitching troubles continued.

The game was put out of reach in the fifth inning. The inning started with Keating reaching base following a fly ball that was dropped by the left fielder. Kyle Schmidt made the most of this blunder, sending a double into left center and driving in Keating. Schmidt then scored when Andrew Gabbard hit a fly ball to left that was also dropped by the left fielder. It was a rough night for him. Kyle Manderfeld then singled to left to drive in Gabbard and give PL the comfortable 6-0 lead that it never relinquished.

Gutoske worked a scoreless seventh inning on the mound to end the game.

Prior Lake will be back in action on Monday night (6/16) at Memorial Park at 7:30pm. Following that game, PL will be on the road on Tuesday night (6/17) at Eagan at 6pm and on Wednesday night (6/18) against Rosemount at Dakota County Technical College at 6pm.

Note: I will be out of town Monday and Tuesday so my next blog post will be following the Rosemount game on Wednesday.
